Dirty Daisy
ABOUT
February 22nd is National Margarita Day! Celebrate with our spin on this beloved Mexican cocktail.
The Margarita — the Spanish word for daisy — gained popularity during the Prohibition Era. While there is some uncertainty around exactly who invented the cocktail, there is no denying the impact it has had on cocktail culture around the globe. More on the mysterious origins of the margarita here.
The base spirit for the margarita is tequila — a distilled alcohol made from the fermented sugars found in the blue agave plant. For a spirit to legally be considered a tequila, its ingredients must consist of at least 51% blue agave. However, most tequilas will advertise themselves at 100% blue agave. Anything with less than 51% blue agave is known as a “mixto” tequila.
For this margarita, we used Altos Tequila Plata. Grown in the Los Altos highlands of Mexico, Altos Tequila Plata is slightly citric and sweet with a fruity aroma. These flavors pair perfectly with the fresh lemon juice and Cointreau. We also add agave nectar for additional sweetness. Lastly, to shake things up, we top this cocktail off with Roscato Rosso Dolce wine.
This drink is served in an old fashioned glass. A salted rim and lime wheel garnish are optional.
