Eden

ABOUT

Was it the apple or the pomegranate? The Forbidden fruit in the Garden of Eden that is. While there’s no straightforward answer, we decided to make a drink using both.

The inspiration behind this mystical cocktail arrived after we whipped up a homemade apple infused vodka. It’s much easier that it sounds. To make your own apple infused vodka, you only need a 24 oz. mason jar; 2 apples, cored and diced (we used Granny Smith apples as that was what we had at the moment); and 2 cups of vodka — we recommend Skyy vodka. Start off by cutting the apples into quarters and removing the core. You don’t have to peel them. You then proceed to dicing them. Next, add the diced apples to the mason jar, and pour the vodka on top.

You should store the mason jar in a cool, dark place for up to two weeks. Gently shake daily. Once the two weeks are up, strain into a clean glass container with a fine mesh strainer. Like most of our infusions, we strain the mixture through coffee filters. While it takes forever, it’s definitely worth the pain.

There are two things to note. As the diced apples sit in the vodka in your sealed container, they will oxidize and your mixture will take on a beautiful amber hue. This is normal and you have nothing to fear. Lastly, after letting the mixture sit for a week, we decided to toss out the apples and add a fresh pair of Granny Smith apples — diced and cored just as the last ones. We let the mixture age for another week for a total of two weeks. This is optional and purely an experiment.

While the drink possibilities with an apple vodka are endless, we wanted to create a cocktail utilizing ingredients that anyone could get ahold of. You can easily swap out the aloe vera syrup for simple syrup if needed.

Our first take on this cocktail was not as successful. It came out too dry and the pomegranate liqueur overpowered the apple vodka. The recipe as is allows each ingredient to shine in its own way. This cocktails takes you through a journey of multiple layers of flavors from your first sip to its finish.

This drink is served in a coupe glass.
