Back 2 Basics

ABOUT

We just entered our first cocktail competition: the 2020 Woodford Reserve Manhattan Experience. Wish us luck!

For the competition, participants must submit two recipes: their best take on the Manhattan and an innovative original recipe using Woodford Reserve Bourbon, Woodford Reserve Double Oaked or Woodford Reserve Rye as the base spirit. The deadline to enter the competition is this Sunday, February 9. You can still join the Manhattan Experience by visiting their site here.

Now check out our take on the King of cocktails: the Manhattan.

The Manhattan is one of the most famous, and simple, cocktails around the globe. Named after one of New York City’s five boroughs, it calls for 2 parts whiskey (traditionally rye whiskey), 1 part sweet vermouth, and 2 parts bitters. However, we like our Manhattans on the sweeter side and used bourbon in place of rye and modeled it after the Martinez — the predecessor to the Martini.

For the sweet vermouth, we used none other than Carpano Antica Formula Vermouth. Invented in 1768 by Italian distiller Antonio Benedetto Carpano, it has stood the test of time and is not only the original red vermouth, but one of the most highly sought-after. Made with its original recipe, Carpano Antica is rich and fruity with chocolate, citrus and spicy notes.

Our choice of bitters include a dash of both Fee Brother’s Cherry Bitters and Bittercube’s Cherry Bark Vanilla Cocktail Bitters. Lastly, we add Luxardo Maraschino Liqueur for an additional sweetener.

This cocktail is best served up in a chilled coupe glass and garnished with Maraschino cherries.
