Nathan's Elixir

ABOUT

Snuggle up under a blanket with this hot toddy variation named after the godfather of Tennessee whiskey — Uncle Nathan “Nearest” Green.

While there’s technically no cure for the common cold, a hot toddy never hurt anyone. In fact, many of the ingredients in hot toddies are known to reduce cold and flu like symptoms. Fresh lemon juice promotes hydration and is a great source of Vitamin C, while honey soothes sore throats, suppresses coughs and is rich in antioxidants.

The base spirit for this hot toddy is Uncle Nearest 1856 Premium Whiskey. This whisky is named after Uncle Nathan “Nearest” Green, the formerly enslaved Black man who taught Jack Daniel how to make whiskey. With its spicy caramel and maple notes, Uncle Nearest is the perfect spirit to pair with a hot toddy.

We also used a little St Germain Elderflower Liqueur as a sweetener. The extract from the elderflower has been used to make medicine for thousands of years and is believed to treat anything from the flu to the plague.

Lastly, instead of hot water, we used freshly brewed ginger tea in this hot toddy recipe. Ginger tea is one of the most recommended teas to drink to fight off cold and flu like symptoms. It has countless therapeutic properties such as: strengthening immunity, reducing inflammation, and fighting respiratory problems among many other health benefits.

So whether you are fighting off a cold, or just boosting your immune system, this hot toddy has you covered.

This cocktail is best served in a hot toddy or Irish coffee mug. A lemon wheel and cinnamon stick garnish are optional.
