Rose Colored Glass

ABOUT

You know the old idiom: seeing the world through rose colored glasses aka having a more positive, upbeat, and optimistic viewpoint of life. Does this way of thinking really make people happier? To test this theory, we did some reading and made a cocktail combining two things that most people love: roses and Hennessy.

A 2015 Yale University study found that “happy people” — people who scored high in trait happiness — pay more attention to positive events or actions around them. They literally gravitate towards positive stimuli. Past research also suggests that happy people have better coping skills, improved job performance, bolstered immune systems, and greater sociability and likability. Bottom: pay attention to the good around you — no matter how small — and your life will start to change. You can check out a summary of the study here.

Now, let’s get into the recipe.

The base spirit for this drink is Hennessy V.S Cognac. Made in the Cognac region of France, this 255 year old brand produces nearly half (42%) of all Cognac sold. Fun fact: more than 95% of all Cognac is sold outside of France. We then made a rose hibiscus syrup by brewing hibiscus tea with rose water and then adding in equal parts cane sugar to create a sweet and herbal syrup with hints of citrus. We compliment those citrus notes with fresh lemon juice and Grand Marnier — a Cognac based orange-flavored liqueur.

This drink is served in a coupe glass. An orange peel garnish is optional.
