Mother Knows Best

ABOUT

Mother’s Day is this upcoming Sunday, May 10. What are you doing to celebrate your mom or the mother figure in your life? We created a drink to celebrate our favorite pastime with our mom and to provide a healthy and delicious brunch cocktail.

Every time around this year our mom starts her fresh juice cleanse. Typically for breakfast, she uses three ingredients: 3 carrots, 2 sticks of celery and 1 apple. She would always say that the carrots provided the bulk of the juice as well as most of its nutrients; that the celery was the filler; and that the apple served as a natural sweetener. Today, we understand even more how nutritious this fresh juice is. You can learn more for yourself here.

Inspired by this tradition, we came up with our own alcoholic version of this juice as a sangria. Below, you can find a step-by-step walkthrough of how you can prepare your ingredients for this drink. As always, you can find the step-by-step instructions on how to make the cocktail itself in the instructions section below. We hope you enjoy it.

Step 1:

The base spirit for this drink is an apple infused vodka. You can definitely purchase a bottle of apple flavored vodka, but that would take all of the fun out of the drink. To make your own apple infused vodka, you only need the following: a 24 oz. mason jar; 2 apples, cored and diced; and 2 cups of vodka. Start off by cutting the apples into quarters and removing the core. You don’t have to peel them. You then proceed to dicing them. Next, add the diced apples to the mason jar, and pour the vodka on top.

You should store the mason jar in a cool, dark place for at least three days and up to two weeks. Gently shake daily. Once you feel that they have sat long enough, strain the vodka infusion into a clean glass container with a fine mesh strainer.

Step 2:

This drink also calls for carrot syrup. You should start by peeling and chopping 2 cups worth of carrots. Next, bring together 8 oz. of unsweetened pineapple juice and one tablespoon of fresh ginger that has been peeled and grated. Make sure to stir together. You can then bring these ingredients together in a blender and blend until smooth. Next, make sure to strain the mixture through a fine mesh strainer to remove the pulp.

Add one cup of sugar to a small saucepan and place heat on medium. Then, strain your carrot juice into the sugar with your fine mesh strainer and stir until the sugar has completely dissolved. Bring the mixture to a low boil, reduce heat, and let simmer on low heat for 5 minutes. Once your 5 minutes are up, remove mixture from heat and let cool completely. You can then strain the syrup into a clean glass container with your fine mesh strainer one last time.

Step 3:

You’re all set and have everything you need to make this cocktail. See below for a full list of ingredients, measurements and instructions on the best way to build the drink.

This drink is served in a white wine glass, or a large pitcher, if you are making a large batch. An orange wheel and/or apple wedge garnish are optional.
